Every year, we organise trips to the regions in which we invest. Together with members of our investment team you have the opportunity to see companies in our portfolios and tap into their reality during visits to factories, facilities and offices. Likewise you meet politicians and economists for further insight on key developments in the region. And not to be forgotten, you also experience the local culture and learn more about the East Capital Universe together with fellow investors from around the world.

17th East Capital Summit in St. Petersburg, 18-20 April, 2012

Explore and gain insights
During the summit we will explore the challenging political and economic reforms facing Russia today, and the potential impact these reforms may have on our investment strategy in Russia. We will also take a close look at the investment approach behind East Capital Explorer and our Public Equity funds.

Focus: Russia− changes and opportunities
Twenty years ago, Yeltsin started the process to create a modern Russia in the ruins of the collapsed Soviet Union. Following a long run of growth and positive development, the country is currently facing another crucial turning point as both the pressure for economic and political change is escalating. The question is: will Russia be able to drive through the necessary reforms in order to realize its full potential? Russia has one of the strongest public finances in the world and benefits from persistently high commodity prices. But the economy is too dependent on energy revenues and on capital from abroad.

The ultimate reform driver in 2012 is likely to be political. It may be difficult to determine exactly what the post-election protesters in Russia want, but it is clear that they are against the status quo. It is very much an urban and middle class uprising and this new political force is expected to put pressure on the ruling elite for reforms in general and a more ambitious fight against corruption and excessive bureaucracy in particular.

The discussions and presentations address a number of key questions related to investments in Eastern Europe, such as:

  • What is the outlook for Eastern Europe and Russia in 2012–2013?
  • To what extent are the economies and markets in Eastern Europe affected by external risks?
  • What investment strategies are essential in the short and long term for this region?
